Violins, Spanish Lessons, and an Abundance of Delicious Indian Food

The first few days of 2014 have been rather successful. I have made some serious headway on my 2014 goal list. I might actually complete this beast of list this year!

2. Lean to play the violin: I rented one from a local music store and have started looking into lessons. I did learn the first few bars of Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star via Youtube… Not nice sounding yet but I'm trying!

3. Buy only one handbag this year (and make it count) – I have not found the perfect bag but I did stop myself from purchasing a bag during the Kate Space Saturday sale. Seriously difficult! The bag was only $67!

5. Learn Spanish – I just downloaded the Duolingo app and am already hooked. It is a free app with many language options.

8. Learn more about wines – I had such a great chat with the sommelier at Rasika DC who helped me choose a region and grape to research first.

17. Read more non-fiction and try a new fiction author every month – My nonfiction reading this month will be Tina Fey’s Bossypants. I have no doubt I will love it as Tina Fey is my idol!

18. Establish a date night with my husband – My husband and I celebrated our 4th wedding anniversary this past week. We treated ourselves to a fabulous dinner out at Rasika.

21. Maintain a budget – I bought a budget book to help me track daily purchases from May Designs. I love that not only will it keep me on track, it will be pretty little addition to my purse!

24. Take a tap dance class – I found a great Living Social deal for Adult Dance classes here in DC. Now…to order tap shoes!

26. Be thankful always - I'm working hard to look on the bright side. I've also set the 4agreements as the lock screen on my phone. That might seem silly but it reaffirms my goal every time I look at my phone.

I hope you all have had a stellar start to the new year!

Week in Review: The One When I Can't Stop Watching Friends

Well, there is no denying it now. I skipped every post on the blog last week. It really wasn’t intentional. Monday arrived and after a hectic day at work, I just didn’t have the energy to write a post about my weekend. (Which was boring, unless you wanted to hear about me watching Friends all day, eating cinnamon Chex out of the box?) So I told myself, “Self, you are amazing. Not to worry about missing one post. You can always catch up on Wednesday.”

Well, Wednesday arrived. My day at work was even more hectic. All I really wanted to do was drink a glass (read-bottle) of wine and eat a few slices (read-full wedge) of Brie. I was so exhausted from work, I couldn’t even think hard enough to write a blog post. (And let’s be honest, I am not writing anything Pulitzer Prize worthy.)  So I told myself, “Self, you are brilliant. Not to worry about missing a second post. You can review the whole week on Friday.”

Well, Friday arrived. My day at work was quite possibly the longest day ever. I am pretty sure the 8 hour work day lasted 16. I also had the brilliant idea of making a trip to Target after work. (A rather successful trip… two new Essie polishes and Hocus Pocus on DVD.) All I wanted to do when I got home was put on fat pants. Also, those Friends DVDs weren’t going to watch themselves. So that’s exactly what I did. I sat on my ass for hours, painting my nails and watching Friends with my dog. It was glorious. I did feel a little bad about missing another post. So I told myself, “Self, you are spectacular. Not to worry about missing the post today. You have all weekend to write a whole slew of posts.”

Well, the weekend went by. The headache from hell hit me all day Saturday so I decided the best course of action was to drink tea and watch more Friends.  (Really the best course of action in any given situation.) My husband came home from a week long work trip super later Saturday night so we lounged about all day Sunday. We did venture out to get an early breakfast from Ted’s Bulletin on 14th St., seriously my new favorite in our neighborhood. There is something so amazing in its simplicity. (I’m probably just tired of all the unnecessary pretentiousness you find in this city… but I digress.) So after a weekend of doing not much of anything and enjoying every second, I had yet to write a word. So I told myself, “Self, you are radiant. Not to worry about missing a full week. You can write a book of posts tomorrow.” (I might be a bit delusional and self-involved)

Well, yesterday passed by. I can honestly say Sunday night and yesterday were a blast and well worth missing a blog post. A group of my friends and I got together for a late night dinner at P.F. Changs on Sunday. We shut that place down! (I know, I know… we are rebels.) Monday was spent at the outlets, buying way too many blazers and realizing how much I have missed having my friends around. After such a fun day, I then took the metro home from Springfield. After a long trip on the metro and a long walk back to my apartment, I just did not have the energy to do much more than hang up said blazers. So I told myself, “Self, get your shit together… tomorrow…tonight, there is more Friends to watch.”

So here I am, home from a long Tuesday at work, made only slightly better by one of my new blazers from H&M, finally posting something. I hate to admit it (no I don’t, I love admitting it.) I am rather proud I was able to ramble about not blogging to make a full blog post. I guess you could say that this was a week and weekend in rewind. Sometimes the business of life takes over and there is just no time for a creative outlet. This week should be (relatively) drama free and I am already working on a real post for tomorrow, while I watch Friends.

So I say adieu (to you, and you, and you.)

Weekend Rewind: Relaxing in DC

Well, it’s Monday again. With another long week ahead, what better way is there to start it off than to take a look at this past weekend.

Saturday:

Another Saturday morning meant another trip to the Farmers’ Market. I really love having this market so close to our apartment. I started the day with a vanilla chai from Wydown. (The coffee art from the photo below is my husband’s mocha) This Saturday was more of a splurge day than a “stocking up” trip. I bought some homemade pickles, fresh goat cheese, and a few pastries for breakfast.  And of course, my weekly flowers, as well. (The pickles, by the way, were a huge splurge. They are $10 a jar. But, so amazing!! I have been walking around my house, snacking on them ever since. Super attractive, I know.)

Saturday afternoon was spent down in the SE at Barracks Row. We attended a BBQ at my husband’s work. Rather than fill up there, we decided to hold off and have dinner at one of the many restaurants on 8th. We selected Matchbox and it was delicious. We split an ahi-tuna salad to start, I selected a roast chicken dish, and the husband selected a crab cake sandwich.

We ended the night watching Property Brothers and eating fro-yo. (Yup, we are super cool people.)

Sunday:

Our Sunday started bright and early at 7:00 a.m. I know, that is crazy early for a Sunday but we have wanted to try the new Ted’s Bulletin on 14th and did not want to wait over two hours for a table. So we decided to beat the brunch crowd and get up and out of the house for breakfast. The place was amazing. The décor and structure of the building is perfect. We decided to sit at the old-school diner countertop. Our experience consisted of bottomless coffee, an old Shirley Temple movie on the TV, and a homemade poptart. Seriously, this might just become our “go-to” Sunday spot.

After breakfast, we took our dog for a nice long walk and spent the rest of the day hanging around the house, taking care of the usual Sunday tasks.

It might not be the most thrilling weekend, but it was a great one nevertheless. I hope everyone had a great weekend as well. I am already looking forward to the next one.

Have a great week!

Labor Day Weekend Rewind

I hope everyone had an amazing Labor Day weekend. It was such a great way to end the summer. Though, here in DC, the weather decided to rebel against my desire for fall. It was hot and humid all weekend. (I am sure once the winter is upon us and I am freezing in layers of clothes, I will miss these hot days. But as of right now, I am so over it!) September is finally here! Bring on the boots, scarves, and everything pumpkin flavored!

Saturday:

I started the weekend off with my new Saturday tradition, the Farmers’ Market. (I just found out the one down the street from my apartment runs all the way through Thanksgiving so … yay!) I love strolling from vendor to vendor, finding new produce and treats to try. I picked up some crisp apples, lots of yummy green things, and my weekly flower bouquet. I also splurged on a mini pie from Whisked DC and a fresh pastry to go with my iced latte from Wydown coffee.

After lots of coffee and my sweet treat, my husband and I checked out the new YMCA in our neighborhood. I even dragged him to yoga. (I forgot to mention to him that it was power yoga … whoops, my bad.) It was such a great class. It kicked my butt but it was still great! We spent the rest of the day lounging, reading, and eating pizza. (Which probably completely negated the benefits of power yoga but it was delicious.)

Farmers' Market Finds

Sunday:

We were treated to a visit from friends who joined us for the DC Sunday ritual of brunch and day drinking. We partook of brunch this particular Sunday at Marvin. The food was good and the location, great. However, their rooftop terrace doesn’t open until 2pm so we ate inside the bar area which was crazy dark for the middle of the day.  Also, I decided to dress for the season rather than the weather and layered a dress with my new olive vest. After brunch, we enjoyed a walk and, on my part, a middle case of heat stroke. But, man, I rocked that vest.

Prior to dealing with the heat!

Monday:

Seriously … in all honesty … I did nothing on Monday and it was epic. I did a little book shopping on Amazon. (Blog post to follow this week!)  My original plan was to go splurge on a mani/pedi but it was so hot out. I could not handle the 6-block walk to my favorite place. I decided an at home pedi was just as good. (It wasn’t but I didn’t have to put on real pants so it worked for me!)

Now the long weekend has ended and I survived my first day back at work (largely in part to with the help of a Pumpkin Spice Latte.) I can’t wait to see what next weekend has in store.
